چکیده

| This paper presents a methodology for evaluation of low-level image analysis methods, using binariza-tion (two-level thresholding) as an example. Binarization of scanned gray scale images is the rst step in most document image analysis systems. Selection of an appropriate binarization method for an input image domain is a diicult problem. Typically, a human expert evaluates the binarized images according to his/her visual criteria. However, to conduct an objective evaluation, one needs to investigate how well the subsequent image analysis steps will perform on the binarized image. We call this approach goal-directed evaluation, and it can be used to evaluate other low-level image processing methods as well. Our evaluation of bina-rization methods is in the context of digit recognition, so we deene the performance of the character recognition module as the objective measure. Eleven diierent locally adaptive binarization methods were evaluated, and Niblack's method gave the best performance.

TRIER AND TAXT: EVALUATION OF BINARIZATION METHODS 31 Evaluation of Binarization Methods for Document Images

This paper presents an evaluation of eleven locally adaptive binarization methods for gray scale images with low contrast, variable background intensity and noise. Niblack’s method with the addition of the postprocessing step of Yanowitz and Bruckstein’s method added performed the best, and was also one of the fastest binarization methods. Keywords— Locally adaptive binarization, Thresholding, ...

An Adaptive Logical Thresholding Method for Binarization of Blueprint Images

In a global thresholding method, a single threshold value is calculated for the whole image. Pixels with a gray scale level under the threshold level are labeled as print; pixels with a gray scale level above the threshold level are labeled as background. The process can be described as follows: b(x, y) = ½ 1 if f (x, y) ≤ T 0 otherwise (2.1) Among the many global thresholding methods, Otsu's m...

A Data Capture System for Hydrographic Maps

The main part of the thesis is five separate research papers published in or submitted to leading journals in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. In addition, a data capture system for hydrographic maps has been designed and implemented. It places the results of the thesis papers in context and demonstrate their importance. The five thesis papers are [1] Øivind Due Trier and T...

Content Aware Music Score Binarization

Image binarization is a common operation in the pre-processing stage in most Optical Music Recognition (OMR) systems. The choice of an appropriate binarization method for handwritten music scores is a difficult problem. Several works have already evaluated the performance of existing binarization processes in diverse applications. However, no goal-directed studies for music sheets documents wer...

Recognition of Digits in Hydrographic Maps: Binary Versus Topographic Analysis

This paper compares the performance of topographic analysis and binary analysis for recognition of digits in hydrographic maps. The performance of each method was measured by the correct classification rate of the final symbol recognition step when processing a complete hydrographic map of size 0.45× 0.6m with about 35,000 digits. The experimental results indicated that binary analysis had a be...
